Barend est un superbe musicien, avec un son de ténor charnu, rond et chaud, un très beau grain, un phrasé fluide et limpide, avec beaucoup de maturité et de générosité. Dans ce nouvel album à l'esthétique assez "classique", on entend toute l'élégance de Barend, un jeu qui va droit à l'essentiel, une réelle connaissance et un amour de ce language, le choix assumé de jouer un jazz plus conventionnel mais tout en authenticité, comme un retour à des sources qui ont dû alimenter sa jeunesse. Je salue au passage le choix judicieux de ses excellents partenaires.

Le saxophoniste Barend Middelhoff, qu'on connaît pour l'avoir entendu naguère avec Olivier Ker Ourio et Denis Leloup, joue ici avec le trio de Pierre Christophe (p), de Cédric Caillaud (b) et de Philippe Soirat, autrement dit la crème.
Il a choisi cinq de ses compositions, deux de Pierre Christophe et trois standards américains. Le son limpide et un peu gras de son saxophone ténor se marie à merveille avec la solide assise rythmique que lui offrent les trois autres musiciens. Cédric Caillaud et Philippe Soirat s'entendent à merveille pour pousser en avant ce jazz mainstream de facture classique, fort mélodique. "Ballade for Anna", un slow voluptueux devrait plaire aux derniers romantiques, s'il en reste. Quant aux autres titres, ils conviennent aussi bien à la danse qu'à l'écoute, ce que n'aurait jamais du cesser de faire le jazz.

Saxophone player Barend Middelhoff is developing into a genuine top tenor player of Dutch heritage. Since 1993 he was a member of The Houdini's, a Jazz sextet from the Netherlands. With this group he toured Australia, Canada and the United States and appeared in National and International Radio and TV shows. As a leader he performed on the North Sea Jazz Festival for the first time in 1992 after winning the first price on the prestigious Middelsee Jazz Concours. In 1995 he traveled to New York to record his debut album "Soil". After graduating from the Sweelinck Conservatory (Amsterdam) he went to New York again in 1996 to study with Jimmy Heath and George Garzone. Back in the Netherlands after six months of studying and performing in "The Big Apple" he recorded "The River", his second CD as a leader. In this period he performed and recorded with such great musicians as Dr Lonnie Smith, Joe Magnarelli, John Engels, Ray Appleton, The Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw, Olivier Ker Ourio, Denis Leloup, Pierre Christophe, Corry van Binsbergen, The Amsterdam Jazz Ouintet, Denise Janah, The Fra Fra Big Band, The Houdini's and many more. In 1999 he moves to Paris, where he recorded a new CD called City Lines (BUZZ 76016) with french musicians. After four years in Paris he settled in Bologna (Italy) in 2003 where he started working with musicians like Renato Chicco, Marco Tamburini, Emanuele Cisi, Ehud Ashery, Paolo Benedettini, Alessandro Minetto, Nico Menci, Guido di Leone and Pietro Ciancaglini. Since 2004 he is the saxophone teacher at the jazz department of the Conservatory of Bologna "G.B. Martini".
Saxofonist Barend Middelhoff, in Nederland vooral bekend van The Houdinis, Dr Lonnie Smith and the Original Grooves, Corrie en de Grote Brokken en trio Engels/Middelhoff/De Wijs, studeerde aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium bij Tim Armacost en Misha Mengelberg. In 1996 veblijft hij enkele maanden in New York om te studeren bij Jimmy Heath, George Garzone, Rich Perry, Dick Oates en Dewey Redman en neemt daar tevens zijn eerste CD op als bandleider, "Soil" (AL 73026), met o.a. trompetist Joe Magnarelli. Terug in Nederland begint hij enkele samenwerkingen op nationaal en europees niveau. Een tweede CD, "The River" (AL 73103) van het Barend Middelhoff Quartet met als gast Carlo de Wijs wordt uitgebracht in 1998. In 1999 vertrekt hij naar Parijs, studeert bij Steve Lacy en verwerft zich een dominante plaats in de levendige Parijse jazzscene, waar hij het Barend Middelhoff Quintet formeert. Daarin spelen o.a. mondharmonicaspeler Olivier Ker Ourio en trombonist Denis Leloup. Verder werkt hij samen met o.a. Pierre Christophe, Remi Vignolo, Franck Aghulon, John Betch, Sangoma Everett e.v.a. Na vijf jaar Parijs vertrekt hij eind 2003 naar Bologna om daar les te geven aan de jazzafdeling het Conservatorium G. B. Martini o.l.v Tomaso Lama. Met het Amsterdam Roma Jazz Quartet presenteert hij in 2006 de CD The Long Journey (Munich Records BMCD 491), die zowel in Nederland als in Italie ruime aandacht in de pers krijgt. Met Italie als woonbasis speelt hij tegenwoordig door heel Europa met musici als: Renato Chicco, Michele Hendriks, Pierre Christophe, Jerome Barde, Roberto Rossi, Andrea Pozza, Pietro Tonolo, Marco Tamburini, Guido di Leone, Paola Arnesano, Pietro Ciancaglini, Paolo Benedettini, Alessandro Minetto, Emanuele Cisi, Daniele Scanapieco ,Max Chiarella.

Barend à étudié au Conservatoire Sweelinck à Amsterdam chez Tim Armacost et Misha Mengelberg. En 1996 il sest établi à New York afin dy étudier pendant quelques mois chez Jimmy Heath, George Garzone, Rich Perry, Dick Oates en Dewey Redman. À New-York il a aussi enregistré son premier album en leader, Soil avec trompetiste Joe Magnarelli e.a.
De retour en Hollande il a conforté son réseau de coopérations à léchelon national et européen. En 1998, Barend sort un deuxième album, The River du Barend Middelhoff Quartet avec en invité Carlo de Wijs.
En 1999 il quitte les Pays Bas pour sétablir à Paris, fait des études avec Steve Lacy et acquiert une position dominante parmi la scène Jazz animé de Paris
Il forme le Barend Middelhoff Quintet, dont font partie lharmoniciste Olivier Ker Ourio et le tromboniste Denis Leloup. En outre il coopère avec Pierre Christophe, Remi Vignolo, Franck Aghulon, John Betch, Sangoma Everett et beucoup dautres musiciens.
Après un séjour de cinq ans à Paris il déménage vers la fin 2003 à Bologna pour y donner des leçons à la section de jazz du Conservatoire G. B. Martini (proviseur Tomaso Lama).
En 2006 il présente avec le Amsterdam Roma Jazz Quartet lalbum The Long Journey, qui a attiré beaucoup dattention de la presse en Hollande aussi bien quen Italie. Des musiciens italiens, qui coopèrent avec lui, sont e.a. Roberto Rossi, Renato Chicco, Andrea Pozza, Pietro Tonolo, Marco Tamburini, Guido di Leone, Paola Arnesano, Pietro Ciancaglini, Paolo Benedettini, Alessandro Minetto, Emanuele Cisi, Daniele Scanapieco en Max Chiarella.
À partir de sa base en Italie il joue à présent à travers toute lEurope avec plusieurs formations internationales.
